Newsmax Pulls a Fox News — Makes Early Call for Warnock in Georgia

Newsmax, the upstart network which has positioned itself as an uncompromising alternative to Fox News, projected Democrat Raphael Warnock as a winner in Tuesday’s Senate runoff races well before other news channels.

Then: On Nov. 3, scores of President Donald Trump’s supporters expressed outrage at Fox News after the network made an early call in Arizona, projecting Joe Biden had won the state.

  • The state remained in play for several days, according to mainstream news organizations – such as CNN and The New York Times – widely viewed as less sympathetic to Trump.
  • In response to the purported act of betrayal, the president urged his followers to abandon his one-time favorite news network.
  • Newsmax, an alternative promoted by Trump, saw significant ratings spikes in the aftermath of the election.

On Monday, Newsmax host Greg Kelly took aim at Fox News, urging viewers to “NEVER FORGET THEIR CALL ON ARIZONA!”

Now: While Newsmax’s hosts and CEO have taken shots at Fox News, insinuating the reigning king of cable news has lost touch with Trump’s base, on Tuesday Newsmax found itself echoing one of the actions that had alienated the president’s supporters.

  • At 11:20 p.m. EST, anchor Rob Schmitt announced Newsmax had called the race for Warnock over Sen. Kelly Loeffler, a Georgia Republican endorsed by Trump.
  • Newsmax was among the first networks to make the call for Warnock.
